So, a few months ago, you had a leaky shower head and replaced it with a new, multi-spray, water massage shower head. It was working fine until it started clogging up and spraying in directions it was not designed to do. Is this the fault of the new shower head? Is it possible to buy a shower head that doesn’t clog up?
The answer is not likely. Here, in the City of Edmonton, our water is hard, meaning it contains a lot of mineral content, such as calcium or magnesium. These minerals, although harmless to us, build up in the holes of our shower heads and can plug them over time. The shower heads, however, can easily be cleaned.
The simplest way to clean a shower head is to submerge it in either a cleaning product that removes calcium (such as CLR) or a mixture of vinegar and water. Using a rubber band and a freezer bag, fill the bag with the calcium removing liquid and tie it over the shower head. After 45 minutes to an hour, remove the bag and run the water to your shower. You should notice that the clogs have cleared up. If they haven’t, you may have to remove the shower head and clean it with small brush.
After a little TLC, your shower head will be as good as new.
