Simmonds Kitchen Development

Hewson Kitchen Development

The Hewson family requested an upgrade to their pre-existing kitchen. The clients had a new vision for the current kitchen, which was still in fairly good shape and relatively modern. More counter space and functionality of the kitchen was key. The pre-existing design was quite cramped and very boxy.

A whole new design was created that opened the kitchen right up and created more space. Counter space was greatly needed, and with opening the area, this was easily accommodated. To maximize functionality, an island was added. The new design also allowed for a table and chair set to be located in the middle of the room instead of cramped into the corner, which had made it difficult to maneuver in and out. Also adding to the organization and functionality of the kitchen was the installment of new cabinets. More room to put things away also meant more counter space to work with. The space has also added a whole new visual appeal to the kitchen, making it appear much larger and elongated.

Dukart Basement Kitchen Development

This was the second project for the Dukart’s. With the children finally leaving the nest, they were motivated to renovate the basement. Originally, there was a collection of small rooms with very dark wall paneling - very 60’s décor. Once we established the wish list, things were settled. Mom wanted a small kitchen to accommodate the cooking and baking for the family holidays get together, as well as canning the garden harvest. Kitchen – created a small kitchen to accommodate extra cooking and baking during holidays, as well as canning space during harvest season.

Past Projects

The first was a kitchen renovation on the main floor; we removed a load bearing wall to give better flow between the kitchen, dining and living room area, as well as to create more open space. There was a need for both a dishwasher and more storage space, which we accomplished by designing and building a custom Island cabinet to match the existing cabinetry.

Shulko Residence Kitchen Renovation

The existing kitchen was early 80’s vintage with natural wood cabinets stained dark walnut. The customer’s request was a bright kitchen that was both spacious and functional without a closed feeling. The house was a split level home with the kitchen well defined on one side by a change in the floor elevation, and on the other side with an official dining room. To give the kitchen a more spacious feel without adding any square footage to the building, we decided to make the dining room feel more like a part of the kitchen. We accomplished this by enlarging the door opening on one side to give the illusion that both rooms were no longer divided. After discussion with the homeowner, it was felt that this would accomplish two things: firstly, it would provide the opportunity for interaction between family members during meal preparation, and secondly, it would provide much needed natural light in the dining room.

The lighting in the kitchen area was quite poor since the previous kitchen cabinets were dark and didn’t reflect much light. To alleviate this, we added four pot lights, multi head track lighting above the sink area, and a high wattage fan light combination controlled by a dimmer switch. The cabinets were a simple design; flat panel with tapered edges for easy cleaning, painted white. Because the kitchen is quite small, they decided to have the cabinets extend right to the ceiling to provide them with much needed extra shelf space.

The kitchen was getting crowded with furniture and would have congested the work areas and made them non-functional. It was decided to use an island unit that would be positioned out of the main work area. The island consisted of a bank of pots and pans drawers with the countertop extending past to accommodate two bar stools. With the island being movable and the bar stools fitting under the counter area, it makes a great breakfast station as well as an extra workspace when needed.
