Nord Alta's Edmonton Windows & Doors Renovation Project Portfolio

"We are delighted with the windows, they look great, and thank you for the trouble you took over making sure that they would fit in with the rest of the house - you have done a great job."

- P. & M. Copus

These are just of few of the window and door renovation jobs we have done in the Edmonton area. For more information on the window and door construction process, visit our Windows & Doors page.

Adding a Bay Window to a Historical Home

The plan was to use a window product that not only captured the historical flavor of the home, but also provided the homeowner with a window product that was very energy efficient. The window product we chose to use in this instance was a Pella Window. Pella Windows have a wood interior and metal clad exterior with removable wood muntin bars. The muntin bars give the appearance of true divided lites without the typical loss of energy efficiency of true divided lites.

The home we were remodeling was in a historical neighbourhood, and so the bay windows fit well within the architecture of the home as well as the neighborhood. On the exterior we were able to accomplish this by blending in the stucco finish, and using wood shutters as well as wood fascia. On the interior of the home, the bay windows provided a seat for a “bric a brac” or space for nesting with your favorite novel. Although the interior wood moldings were not identical to the existing, they were a good match in size and profile. The customer was so pleased with the results, that we replaced all the other windows in their home.

Granger Bay Window Renovation

The customer’s desire was to put the largest bay window within the existing opening without changing the look or character of the home.

The first problem was that most bay windows project outwards from the building farther than the existing roofline; in this case it was a slight 12-inch overhang. The solution to the problem was to add a roof to follow the outline of the bay with an overhang that would protect the bay window from water as well as blend in to look like it had always been there.

The second problem was how to support the bay window since the basement was finished, and extension of the cantilevered joist was not an option. It was decided to use steel brackets bolted to the foundation.

As the project unfolded, it was discovered that the existing window frame had actually supported the roof load with its structural mullions. Now that the old window was removed and there would no longer be anything there to support the roof load, we had to install a beam to carry the load. This meant temporarily supporting the roof while the new beam was installed.

The homeowners needed an energy efficient window that had blinds between the glass to give them privacy as well as reduce heat gain in the summer. We chose to use a wood metal clad triple-glaze window for high energy efficiency, which also incorporated shading options between the glass. The nice feature of having the blinds between the glass is that they are out of the way from little hands, and require fewer cleanings from dust.

Tea for Two Deck & Patio Door

The customer’s dream was to sit on their front deck in the early evening, shortly before retiring for the night. They wanted to enjoy the long summer days while leisurely reading or discussing the events of the day.

This renovation was made to the master bedroom and could possibly pose a risk to the homeowner’s privacy. To eliminate this risk, we chose to use Pella windows and doors. Their exclusive between the glass shading options we were able to make this a very private setting, while giving the homeowner immediate access to the outdoors.
