Clear the clutter

Every kitchen renovation requires that the contents of the kitchen go elsewhere until the work is completed. This may seem like an easy task and for a few of us, it is. Most of us are collectors of the finer things in life such as the 12 piece place setting that we use only on special occasions. The best time to unload some of this stuff is before the renovation starts, rather than after, as you may decide that your not that devoted to keeping those fine items anyways.

Keep a serviceable area for breakfast and lunch making

Most of us can get away with a table, toaster, and array of snack items. This would take care of one maybe two meals for the day. If it’s in the budget allow yourself to dine out once a week at the mall or perhaps aunt Susie’s invite for pot roast might be a nice change-up. At any rate, try to give yourself some dining variety.

Expect the Unexpected

When you’ve chosen the right contractor for your job, you should understand that there will be other sub-trades working in your home. No matter how qualified some of his or her people are, there is always the chance for the unknown. Leaving a compressor plugged in overnight and it automatically comes on at 3 in the morning. (Totally unacceptable) If you’re paying a tradesman 50-100/hr. for their services and they can’t figure out how to sweep up the sawdust and put their goods and tools away at the end of the day, guess who is going to come home to it. (Again unacceptable) Set the tone and let them know that you don’t want to shovel out all the debris when you get home and do this early in the process, like when you’re signing the agreement.

Oh, and of course that brings up the agreement. If you want the specific product in your renovation have the contractor itemize these things in your agreement and what substitutions would be allowed if any.
